Linguistic diversity in the United States is reaching unprecedented levels, and it’s only set to increase.
Did you know that the number of people in the U.S. who speak a language other than English at home has nearly tripled since 1980? Today, about one in five Americans speaks a second language at home, contributing to the U.S. becoming the most linguistically diverse country on earth, with over 350 languages spoken.
This rich tapestry of languages is largely driven by immigration, with more than 40 million people living in the U.S. who were born in another country. As a result, immigrants and their descendants are expected to account for 88% of U.S. population growth through 2065.
These shifts highlight the increasing importance of embracing language diversity and understanding its impact on education, health care, and community building.
