Our healthcare partners are always seeking to bring language access closer to their patients’ bedsides.
One way to do this is through mobile interpreting. You can download the LanguageLine® app to any networked mobile device and instantly reach a live, professional interpreter in more than 240 languages at the touch of a button. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in video or audio-only formats.
There is yet another solution that brings an on-demand interpreter to the patient.
“Wearables” are becoming increasingly common in healthcare settings. These devices include lanyards, handsets, smart badges, and two-way mobile devices. They are made by the likes of Vocera, Mobile Heartbeat, and Ascom, to name a few.
These devices are typically worn daily or assigned to the caregiver at the start of a shift and returned once their shift ends. The common functionality among these devices is that they have a microphone and speaker, and can be activated with a voice or a touch of a button.
LanguageLine can “language enable” these wearable healthcare devices so that in seconds they can connect with a live, on-demand interpreter.
How it Works
Our clients are provided a dedicated toll-free number and User IDs that are uniquely theirs. These can be programmed into the wearable device for direct access to interpretation support.
All that remains is for the doctor, nurse, therapist, or caregiver to press a button or simply say “Call LanguageLine.”
How to Connect with a Language Interpreter
Let’s say that a doctor is wearing a smart badge and wants to communicate with a Spanish-speaking patient during rounds.
She would press the button on her smart badge and say, “Call LanguageLine.” An outbound call would be placed via her hospital’s designated 800-number.
Next she hears, “Thank you for calling LanguageLine Solutions. Please state the name of your desired language.”
“Spanish,” she says.
“Spanish,” she hears. “If correct, please say ‘yes.’”
“Yes,” she says.
Within seconds, a live, professional Spanish interpreter is connected.
The doctor hears, “This is Adriana, Spanish Interpreter 12345. How can I help you today?”
The conversation continues naturally from there, with the interpreter creating mutual understanding between the doctor and patient.
